Sized for use instead of ornamentation (some pockets are way too small), each pocket can carry a day's food/snacks, personal items, readily accessible stuff (headlamps, meds, H2O purification, etc), first aid, and a host of other items - and can be accessed without taking your pack off, saving energy and time on the trail.
