You can easily remove the inner pad to use separately for backpacking/lightweight purposes. 

The pads can be snapped together to make one big cozy mattress. 

I love this pad, I am a fussy light sleeper/side sleeper and this was the only pad that felt comfortable enough for me. I’m old and bought a van so I don’t use it anymore.
